Grayson County Master Gardeners
Message from the President
Greetings everyone,
Our next meeting will be on Aug. 10 at the Courthouse. This will be an evening meeting beginning with a finger-food and dessert fest at 6 p.m.
This is an opportunity for those of you who work during the day to get your 4 required meetings in. (October and December will be evening meetings also.)
At our Board meeting July 20, we decided to hold a 'Feedback Meeting for Interns' We want to solicit suggestions for ways to improve the Intern experience. We will work out a date at the August meeting. All of you Interns, please think of ways to improve your Intern-ship and in general, how to improve our Master Gardener organization.
Watering everyday is the key to getting through this HOT weather. Don't forget to water yourself by drinking a glass of water before heading out into the heat. Take frequent breaks to drink more water. Keeping yourself hydrated will prevent heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. A straw hat may also help keep you cooler. Grayson County Master Gardener Nancy Grella wrote an excellent article about this in the July/August Roses on the Red newsletter. We will try to talk her into posting it on this web site.
Sandra and I cannot be described as 'morning people' but during this hot weather, we get up about 6 a.m., drink a couple of big cups of coffee and stagger out to the gardens.... We take a hydration break about every hour and work until about 10 a.m., when the heat forces us back into the house. We sometimes return outside in the late evening to 'tidy up' taking time to put tools away and to check on other rose and flower beds before it gets dark.
I am proud to be a Master Gardener. I hope you are proud too.
Thanks,
Jerry
The Grayson County Master Gardener Association is an educational and volunteer program affiliated with the Texas Master Gardener Association and the Texas Cooperative Extension within Texas A&M University.
The program is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and extend horticultural projects throughout Grayson County. These goals are implemented through the training and volunteer efforts of the group.
Master Gardeners contribute many volunteer hours to help schools, churches, businesses and citizens with various gardening projects. Master Gardeners also use their knowledge to answer gardening questions at the local extension office, sponsor educational programs, assist with youth gardening programs, and participate in city beautification projects.
